Great find! Highly recommended. Excellent selection of rolls and nigiri. Innovative menu. Eclectic atmosphere. Superior service. Roasted garlic edamame and a rainbow roll to die for. Delicious! We will be back!

From the outside you wonder if you should go in but once you do you will start to get giddy with joy. The joy you have when you feel you're "in the know." We had the Las Vegas roll, which was great! Then I had to try the Seafood Yakisoba to make sure they treat such a classic item with care. They did! Even well plated on top of a very complex flavor experience. Top notch. I can't wait to be back to try the other sushi rolls. Oh, and there is a great bar space for chatting with the chef if you decide to go alone. Happy living.

Loved the food here! Kind spendy but well worth the price. Excellent sushi, generous lunch bento portion - my veggie one came with miso, tempura, rice, salad, sushi and baked tofu. The Yasai is wrapped in thinly sliced eggplant. Yummy! Check out this place when you're in CDA.

Love this place! They have great drinks, the vegan tofu box is amazing!!! I am so picky about how I have my tofu cooked and they nailed it! I also love their udon and yakisoba. One of my favorite places in town!

Best sushi in Eastern WA. And a fantastic social environment. It's a fun spot to take a date or hang out with friends. The staff are always friendly and prompt.

I have had Sushi all over the world and syringa lands on my top 5! Great atmosphere, customer service and food quality! I recommend making reservations for it's small joint, and hard to get in to especially on a weekend! Also, the bread pudding is the best I've ever had!

I am normally not a fan of Japanese restaurants. I've never really found any Japanese places that have good and interesting food. However, this place was different. The tofu gyoza was the best gyoza I have ever had, the salad was really good, and the Tofu Shogayaki (normally comes with pork, but they substituted in tofu for me) was excellent as well. The place was pretty busy for being around 4pm, so during the busier hours, it would be strongly advised to get a reservation. The service was great, and the waiters were very friendly. I can't find anything bad about this place. If it wasn't more than 5 hours away from where I live, I would definitely eat here often.

First time we ate here. We will never be back. What I know of raw fish it's suppose to be cold when served. The other thing I could smell old fish as I was sitting there waiting for my food. I'm sorry but the food was really pour Quality. I walked out of there wondering what I just ate.

Came on a Tuesday evening and it was packed! We sat at the sushi bar. The service was really good; no complaints there. The food seemed authentic, and they had a fun vegetarian roll (the yasai roll) that was DELICIOUS. The ambiance is both cool and intimate. I would definitely go back!

  • Jamieleigh W.

Love their miso soup and crunch roll! Yum! Hubby loved his veggie roll (forget the name) and the owner and staff were very friendly and kind. We came in 20 mins to closing and it was still jam packed so we sat at the sushi bar. Very loud but loved it, great prices too. The scallops, however, felt like their two flavors conflicted and wouldn't recommend them.

Show up on Wednesday and get a BOTTLE of decent wine for about $10. I love to see restaurants that don't gouge you in the drink department. Kudos! I have had sushi in Singapore, San Francisco, and Seattle, and Syringa Cafe did not disappoint. Definitely the best sushi in the Inland NW, and on top of that, the desserts were even good! I finished off with one of the best bread puddings I've ever had. Great job!

I've had sushi all over in some pretty legit spots and I have to say this place is at the very top of my list. Every time I am in town for work, I make it a point to come here. Last night I had to wait 30 minutes because it's a very small place and always packed. They do take reservations so I would recommend doing that if you can plan ahead. The last time I was there I sat at the sushi bar and the owner told me about a roll that isn't on the menu, the samurai. It's filled with avacado, cucumber and tempura shrimp and topped with salmon and 2 delicious oils that I'm not sure what they are...i think a basil and chili oil but not completely sure. It's to die for. I always start with their homemade miso soup and the seared tuna nigiri which he slides some extrat ginger and wasabi into. The place is decorated beautifully and I love seeing the owner behind the sushi bar doing it just as good if not better than any native japanese sushi chef would. My only complaint is that it's so tiny and the servers aren't the most friendly but the food is so good that I don't mind!

  • Wesley R.

Great sushi, really good specials. Those are the pros, the cons are very small seating area and not a real personable staff. Making reservations are pretty much a must if you want a chance to get in, outside seating available in the summer.

  • Brianna L.

Excellent sushi for an amazing price. Really unique and interesting rolls, with a good assortment of crowd favorites too. I loved everything I tried - the sweet and sour roll was particularly good. Our server was very friendly and made great recommendations. The drinks were also very well-priced. Excited to try it again!

Excellent sushi, friendly service and great ambiance made this an excellent choice for sushi. The trout roll was unique and I would definitely recommend it!

  • Stephen R.

I love sushi, but don't get to eat it often since it is expensive and my wife doesn't really care for it. I found the service to be outstanding, I didn't mind the cramped feeling to the place and the wait wasn't bad, although we got there right when they opened. I look forward to going back, but couldn't imagine going either right when they open or by placing a reservation first. The sushi was fresh and outstanding!

  • Erin B.

The sushi I had was not very high quality and the flavor profiles were just not that great. The rice was soggy and it was incredibly overpriced. For me, sushi is all about the fish, not the bells and whistles. It just wasn't that well made. I've been there before and had a better experience, but the last three times were not successful. The wait staff treats you like you're a burden. They are rude and abrupt. When you spend 100.00+ on dinner and wine, you expect to be treated with respect, not feel like they need to shove you out the door to make room for the next person. We were there for one hour, and didn't linger by any means, but I felt very rushed. I wanted to enjoy my date night, and unfortunately, that just didn't happen. That fact is combined with they have an absolutely horrible owner. I'd never take my family there after the way I saw him treat another customer. They were rebuked for bringing in an iced tea. After making an encouraging comment to the person who obviously didn't mean any harm, I was rudely dismissed without an apology and treated like my business didn't matter. I'll never be back.

What an excellent experience! The edamame is the best I've had (love the garlic they serve it with!) and the vegetarian sushi is -fantastic-. Our waiter was top-notch and the atmosphere was great. Highly recommended.

I've never written a review for yelp before. But my fiance and I live in San Francisco and go here every time I visit my parents. This place is absolutely fantastic and hands down one of my favorite spots for sushi; it beats out many of our favorite spots in San Francisco. Totally agree with the confusion as to why its not 5 stars.

    (5)
  • Richard F.

I have no idea why this is not 5 stars. Food amazing. Versatility available. Think outside of the menu. (VJJ hand roll) Service is peerless. You get what you put in to it. This review is not about food it is about the dining excursion.

We ate here last July for lunch. Place very crowded , parking difficult, small tight slots. This restaurant was recommended by neighbors while visiting the ID Area. I think the food is O.K But not outstanding. We waited for a table for 20+minutes. Service & help with the menu none existence . It must be popular with the locals to be so busy. I will not be eating here again & would not recommend .

Awesome food, a little pricey but very fresh sushi. It got really crowded really quick so it can get a little tight. Otherwise this place rocked.

Best bet in town for sushi/sashimi, I don't get to eat it often; my wife doesn't like the stuff. Get a reservation! Get a bigger place with a separate bar so we don't have to listen to the loud folks would be nice.

  • Molly F.

Good food??....couldn't know. Walked up to a line with two couples and 4 tables open. Waited for 20 minutes before the first couple was seated only to be pulled from their table and put back in line because it turned out all the tables were reserved (for who? I didn't see). A place so small shouldn't take reservations and if they do at least let the rest of us know that we're wasting our time. Went to Ugly Fish...got seated right away and the food was fine. Maybe Syringa's sushi is the bomb..but for me no inland sushi is worth waiting for an unknown amount of time.

I've been eating sushi for many, many years, in many different places ranging from the time when I lived SF Bay area to visits to Washington DC to time spent overseas in Singapore, and I love this place. You definitely need reservations, but it's worth the wait. The food is always good, and often great. They have a great selection of sake and I have yuet to have an appetizer that wasn't phenomenal. My favorite is the poke. This is not a place for large groups, but any group of 4 or less will find the place very enjoyable. 6 or 8 person groups get a bit crowded, but I've been in groups that size there and still found it pleasant. The service can be spotty, but I've never had bad service there. I find that this is not the kind of place to go to if you're in a hurry. Generally this is where I go to spend an evening eating great food in a mellow atmosphere.

Sorry but being a Japanese I can't give more stars though it is probably the best in the area. I ordered the Sushi Bento which was quite a bit of food. There was a serving of Tempura, 2 nigiri sushi (Maguro and Salmon), California-type Roll and a Hamachi/cucumber roll with a bowl of miso-shiru. The Tempura had a sprinkling of pepper which I didn't care for, not traditional in my books. The miso-shiru (soup) was very strong, probably used Akai (Red) miso instead of Shiro (White) miso which I prefer. The sushi tasted fresh and was served in generous portions. My husband had the Oyako Donburi but said it was missing sugar which is important because without it the sauce is just salty with the soy sauce. The service was absolutely terrific and friendly!

  • Anora K.

No guys, no! This is not decent sushi. It is over priced for the quality and I am pretty positive that wasn't even sushi rice, just regular rice. It was sort of awful and the place was pretty pretentious. Quite the turn off for a place that doesn't even have good food. Someone did tell me they get their fish from FSA, which I am not sure of, but it tastes not awesome. I guess if you like all of your sushi deep fried, this is your place. Then maybe you wouldn't care or notice the quality of ingredients.

Went again. Managed to refrain from ordering the duck tataki for once. Had the poke "small plate". Also awesome, but it's tougher to make poke exceptional, so if you have to choose I'd say still go for the duck. It was still awesome, don't get me wrong, just not quite AS awesome, relatively. Basically ditto to the spider roll I had. It's pretty tough to screw up a spider roll, unless you make it out of breaded vulcanized rubber instead of crab, so again, maybe less of an opportunity to set oneself apart. Standout this time was the dessert. I saw them preparing what appeared to be a bread pudding with ice cream and caramel sauce in a little saki container for another table and, since I didn't actually see it on the menu anywhere, just told them that I wanted to go to there. It was pretty spectacular, and I'm not even a dessert guy. The contrast between cold ice cream and a warm dessert is always appreciated, but it's made far better when the warm part has a nicely crispy exterior and a moist, tasty center. Plus it was a pretty massive desert, easily enough for two people. And not just for two people to get a taste, enough for two people to basically have their own dessert. Of course, I ate it all myself, but I'm awesome like that. I think the main thing that sets Syringa (and a nearby breakfast restaurant that shall remain nameless) apart from the 50 or so of its contemporaries I've visited, is care. I think they care about what they're doing. They care about what they're putting out. They don't just want to be acceptable, or just profitable, they want to be exceptional. And I think the owner is either there enough, or a good enough judge of character, that he makes damn well sure that the other employees care as well. It's a great place, pure and simple.

I love this place for authentic tasting Japanese food and sushi. Is it the best sushi I've ever tasted in my life? No. But it's the best sushi I've had since moving to Idaho. And honestly, the restaurant is so cute and the service so good, I think I'd come here even if this restaurant is located in L.A. (which considering some of the insane sushi I've had in L.A. is no small compliment). Along with the Garnet Cafe (conveniently located next door), this is probably my favorite restaurant in Coeur D'Alene. There are plenty of menu options for friends who don't eat raw fish and they do a great job of sourcing sustainably harvested sea foods. If you're up in the air between this place and Ugly Fish for sushi, I'd say come to Syringa.

If you are on a lunch break, call ahead and save yourself some trouble! This place is TINY, so it fills up fast for the lunch rush and service grinds to a crawl since evry rool is hand made to order which I can truly appreciate. I would suggest anyone on a budget try the lunchtime BENTO BOX which is a steal! Their soups are always divine, sushi fresh and tasty with some nice servers to boot!

I had such a fantastic dinner at this place with my friends. The Sashimi was very nicely done and fresh, the tempura was beautifully fried- the presentation...truly appetizing but most of all, the service was great! two thumbs up for Syringa! Kampai!

Syringa offers fresh sushi and more importantly has hamachi kama...which I get every time I'm there

Oh my word, I've been going to Syringa for years now and have never written a review?! How is that possible?! After moving to Idaho from California in '07, I was steeling myself for the worst: a life with sub-par sushi. We've only tried one other sushi restaurant in the Spokane area, but that's ok, because we love the food at Syringa so much, we don't need to go anywhere else. Their spider roll can't be beat. I mean it. The crunch roll, syringa roll, california roll, EZ-B roll, and tiger eye are all the bomb.com . OH! And the Unakyu (eel and cucumber) is amazing! It's a smaller roll but so tasty! I LOVE IT! As others have mentioned, this place IS small, so be prepared to wait or call ahead. Especially on a Friday or Saturday night. This place is GREAT for take-out. Seriously. Just call in and order to your hearts' content, then you get to bring home your treasures and gorge yourself in the comfort of your own home - what could be better? Since it's always busy, I would definitely recommend calling ahead if you've got a bigger party than 4, it's worth waiting a few minutes, I promise! The "art" is a little strange and some might even say off-putting, but I just keep my focus on what's on my plate, not the walls and I'm fine :D Give it a try! There really IS great sushi to be found in Idaho!

  • Nicki W.

There are not really enough stars available for me to rate this place...LOVE!!! I have eaten a lot of sushi from coast to coast and although it makes NO sense in the middle of Idaho, this is by far my favorite place!! I think it is combination of the small space, the warm casual atmosphere, the adventurous chef, nice wine list and definitely the AWESOME service. Typically we just have them bring us whatever the chef reccommends and I have never been dissappointed...or hungry!! It is always busy for dinner on the weekends so make reservations. You will NOT be dissappointed!!!

I am writing this review seated down the street from Syringa at Bistro on Spruce. Why, you might ask? During a cross- country roadtrip, my wife and I found ourselves looking for a late lunch in Coeur D'Alene and were taken in by the glowing reviews of Syringa's sushi on Yelp. We sat down next to some other patrons on the front patio since it was such a gorgeous day. Unfortunately, being on a roadtrip, we were forced to leave after going 15-20 minutes without receiving a water, a menu, or even a word from either of the servers working the decidedly non-peak dining area. Slow service is one thing. Non-existent is quite another. One star only because "zero" is not an option.

  • R S.

Although I love the sushi, the service wasn't very good. Recently, I called to get an order to pick up and was told they were too busy. I was shocked. Maybe I'll go back, maybe not. There is other good sushi in the area.

Good Sushi...The once in a lifetime roll is excellent! Very popular place.

  • Scott L.

This was quite honestly the worst sushi my wife and I have ever had. The crab in the California roll and the salmon in the Seattle roll were so fishy that we couldn't even eat them (I've never had fishy imitation crab) The other 2 rolls were just nothing special. Just bland rolls that I wouldn't remember tomorrow. Very disappointed in this place. Ill be sticking with Fu-ki in Post Falls!!

  • Dyl L.

Hands down the best sushi I have ever had in the Inland Northwest. The fish is so ridiculously fresh and tender. Also the owner actually works behind the sushi bar and is a great guy to have a conversation with as he makes your sushi. Seems like it is always busy and it's a pretty small place but definitely worth any wait you have. It even beats the sushi I've had in Seattle. Give it a try, you won't regret it.

We have been eating at Syringa for 4 or 5 years now, and the quality is always fantastic, the servers and the service are wonderful (attentive, but not overbearingly so) and now that we have a baby, we find that dinner at Syringa is a surefire way to lull him to sleep with its busy murmur of voices and comforting smells. It's a win all the way around.

We were visiting from CA, from the SF Bay Area and were so lucky to have eaten here. A truely great experiance all the way around. A really great find "in the middle of nowhere" (so to speak, even though we know better and loved the town). To find a sushi place of such high quality in a land locked state was a wonderful surprise and a testament to the owner. The owner was a really nice guy, serious, in charge of his crew in an impressive way, but also down to earth and friendly to everyone. We had some rolls and some nigiri, both of which were very good. We had the carrot and ginger soup which was divine. The owner served us some deep fried tuna in a chili sauce (on the house) and it was amazing!! Sit at the bar.

Best sushi in town. Have been at least a dozen times. Try the bass appetizer!! Always good service. Reservations really needed most of the time. The Miso sea bass entree is our favorite as well. Sushi rolls excellent and great artwork from local artists on the wall.

  • Atahualpa C.

Sushi is hard thing to very well, especially since it is basically delicate and precise use of simple and (hopefully) fresh ingredients. Syringa fulfills all desires in this area and excels in so many more. A spunky, small, and dedicated restaurant, the crew make every possible effort to make the food excellent and keep the customers lively. Fine tuned and here to stay for a long time I would suppose.

I may not be a sushi expert, but I have been to my share of sushi bars. I was very surprised when I went in here the very first time. The fish was very fresh, and the selection was good. I went again another day, and the soba noodle soup makes for a filling lunch. The prices for some of the fish and rolls were a bit high, but for the most part compare with just about any place else I have been. What still impressed me was the quality of the fish. I keep looking for an excuse to go back.

I don't care what anyone says, best damn sushi in town. I go to sushi restaurants pretty much any city I'm in and none of them ever compare to Syringa. Viljo gets it right everytime, and the sushi is just superb. Also stopped in for lunch one time and had a bento box, equally delicious. Service is friendly, and although you may have to wait a while for a table, it's very well worth it. Whenever relatives come from out of town I try and bring them here.

  • Aaron P.

Wow, what hasn't already been said about this gem? Well with Syringa, it's praises bear repeating. Maybe I'm a little biased because I was introduced to sushi at this restaurant, or maybe so because I've tried all the other "hyped" spots in the area and they all paled in comparison. I've had nearly all the makisushi off the menu, tried many specials on nigiri, and half a dozen other entrees/appetizers and nothing has let me down. They have a very fresh and delicious green salad that I usually add the duck breast to, and the gyoza and the dipping sauce it comes with absolutely fantastic. It's true that reservations are usually a must, especially on the weekends. The service is always amazing, the staff is happy to answer any questions you may have. Dining area is small in a good way, kind of makes you get to know your neighbor. I always go back to Syringa when I'm in the mood for sushi.

Excellent sushi by any city's measure!!! Love their Sake selection too! (5-Stars if you carried my favorite sake: Wakataki!!) We had an assortment of sushi - vegetable tempura - and a WHOLE cooked seabass, which was spectacular! Love this place - highly recommended. Make a reservation to ensure you're seated when you want to be.

This is an excellent restaurant! The sushi is wonderful. The chef cares and it shows. The service is very professional and efficient. The atmosphere is great. What more can be said, except I am getting hungry just thinking about the place.

we are from the San Francisco area and have been to some AMAZING sushi places. With that said, we were not in the least disappointed with Syringa. The servers and chefs behind the counter are awesome, the sake selection was impressive, they do not load their rolls up with rice, the fish is very fresh (especially for the inland NW), and the place itself has great character. Give it a try! Make a reservation first though, if possible.

Best sushi in the Sandpoint/Coeur d'alene/ Spokane region. The menu doesn't have a lot of raw sushi rolls but I just make my own combinations. They always have a great selection of fresh, raw fish. Yum. Small place. Reservations if you can.

My wife and I are from San Diego. We recently took a trip to CDA to scope the town to see if we could see ourselves moving there. We had a great trip in general...Syringa being just one of the many surprising and enjoyable stops along the way. The ambiance was cool, comfortable, and welcoming. Our server, I think his name was Steve (sorry if that's not right!), was awesome...very friendly, honest, and generally on it! The food was very good! It doesn't have an overwhelmingly huge selection of original rolls or sashimi dishes, but what we had was super solid! I'd recommend Syringa to anyone passing through town and locals alike... Cheers guys, we'll be back for sure!

I love Sushi! Love it, love it, love it. I've been to some of the best sushi spots in the country - in San Francisco, Seattle, and New York. I figured we would not find good sushi in the inland Northwest, but I was willing to try Syringa. I'll have to say that I was pretty disappointed in my Syringa dining experience. Yes, it's unique for CDA and I am happy CDA has a sushi spot. However, I think I'll save my sushi eating for trips to larger cities. My wife and I were turned away the first time we attempted to eat at Syringa on a Friday night (even though there were 3-4 empty tables). Apparently, you always need a reservation on the weekends. A few weeks later, we made a reservation. We liked the decor, but the music was too loud. I can handle loud music, but I couldn't hear my wife and she was sitting two feet away. Second, the service was amazingly slow. We made the mistake of coming to the restaurant with an appetite. After finally ordering, an hour and five minutes passed before the waiter even checked on us. At that point, we were debating whether to go to our favorite Vietnamese restaurant, which is just down the street. Finally, after my now angry wife stared down the waiter, he came by to see how we were doing. We explained how hungry we both were and asked if they had any kind of snack to tide us over until the meal was ready. Our waiter kicked into high gear. He promptly delivered to us a bowl of rice and an order of edamame. Just after finishing our big bowl of rice, he delivered our sushi order. I had pretty much filled up on rice, and almost couldn't finish the sushi. The sushi was good. If I based my review on the sushi alone, I would give Syringa 4 stars. We both appreciated that they did not charge us for the edamame or rice. However, I don't think we'll go back again based on our overall experience. We love Susi, but not enough to wait for that long. Maybe our dining experience at Syringa was atypical???

I moved to Coeur d'Alene not too long ago. I have lived in many big cities and have eaten at some amazing sushi places. I've tried other places in CDA and have not been very impressed, but I kept driving by this little place and saw that it was always busy. I stopped in the other night with a friend for dinner and found my FAVORITE sushi place in the Inland Northwest! The service was amazing, the atmosphere is great, and the food was awesome. I got the dragon roll and it was amazing. Like the other reviewer said, it's small, so I would recommend making a reservation as they get busy. Good food, reasonably priced, and a really fun place for dinner.

Sushi rolls are way to small and over priced. Rolls were very dry and didn't taste "fresh". Our Framily said the bento box and tempura they ordered was delicious and very affordable. The atmosphere is nice but our waiter was very snobby.

The ambiance of this place was great. Visiting from Texas and not from this area I could tell the locals love this place. Our waitress was warm and friendly. She did forget my wine but remembered by the time she brought my food out. I ordered the small sushi plate with miso soup. My Mom ordered the Bento box and had then make it spicy. The reason there is only four stars and not five is because the quality was not great. The cuts were a little too thick over my rice. The skill of the sushi chef left room for improvement. With that being my only complaint I would defiantly come back. This place was a fun hot spot with a great atmosphere!

I loved my tempura shrimp roll, but the tamago left much to be desired. There wasn't that slightly sweet you expect from a tamagoyaki sushi. Or at least, the one I've come to expect from every other tamago sushi I've had before. So, while I'd order the tempura roll again, I'll skip the tamago entirely. The rice, just didn't want to stay together for my pieces or my roll, which had the rice on the outside. The unagi was good quality and my daughter loved it on both her piece and roll sushi. She loved her Ika and Tako as well. I haven't gone to Syringa before now due to the small size and it always seeming busy. Thankfully on a Thursday afternoon for lunch, it wasn't packed! The art work inside is beautiful, and for a small place the atmosphere was rather nice. All in all, A-Ok. I'd really like if I could give 3.5 stars for things. As that's what I'd put. :)

Everything was "meh".. If you spend $50 on sushi it should be delicious. It wasn't very flavorful or good.. I called and asked for baked rolls and all 3 rolls were uncooked... I am tempted to go ask for my money back. Not to mention I ordered 2 hours early and it wasn't even ready on time! Pretty bummed about it.

The first time I went to Syringa I was very impressed by the food and the waiter staff. I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass Misozuke and it tasted amazing! My mother ordered sushi and it was great. The waiter I think was the owner of the place, he was very friendly and knowledgeable. The soup I had before the meal was a seasonal (fall season) soup which tasted wonderful. The green tea I ordered before my meal had a strong taste to it and I was impressed. The second time I went to Syringa was a horrible experience! The waiter was a young guy who seemed unhappy to be there. He did the bare minimum required for wait staff (brought us our orders). He wasn't friendly and didn't ask us how we liked our food. I ordered green tea and it tasted like hot water. I asked politely for the wait staff to re-brew my tea and make it stronger. He did so and it tasted great. I ordered oyakodonburi for my meal, which is chicken egg mixed together on top of rice. It was horrible! The chicken and egg were not mixed together very much, so it didn't have the oyako texture that is expected for oyakodonburi. The cook did not put any salt on the chicken and egg or the rice. The oyakodonburi did not have the sauce that is supposed to be in oyakodonburi (chicken broth, mirin, soy sauce, sugar) all it had with it was black pepper. There was way too much black pepper! I could literally see the layer of black pepper on top of my food! I was worried about actually sneezing on top of my meal because it was packed with black pepper and it was an actual thought that ran through my mind at the time. The waiter was so rude I felt I couldn't ask him to return the food. He didn't say anything overtly rude, but his body language is "I'm so annoyed. Don't ask me to do anything." Normally waiters ask customers "how is your meal?" He never asked that once. He wasn't friendly, just "here is your food" and then leaves. When I asked him to re-brew my tea, he did so but he was very rude about it. He just looked bothered and handed the drink over. I was very disappointed having to deal with that type of behavior and food when I am a paying customer. I don't think I want to go to Syringa again because I don't want to gamble having the same experience I had the second time around. I would advice the owner to check how the cooks and wait staff act when he is not around.

SYRINGA ----- WHAT A SUPERB FIND!!!! This place was certainly a super special find and treat. Great atmosphere, super knowledgeable and accommodating staff and the food was absolutely delicious, every single thing we tried was outstanding. I had some rolls that were out of this world delicious (try Godzilla and Dragon), their salads were also great, which is generally not what I expect at a Japanese joint. The edamame was the best I have ever had and the carrot ginger soup was outstanding. It is too bad we are not in Coeur D'alene or I would definitely become a regular..... It is definitely one of those places that you are safe to order anything and guaranteed to be please. Super high quality sushi bar. Yum.

Deliciousness! Better than any sushi I've had in Boise. It almost rivaled some of the SoCal sushi I've had. Nice, large pieces of fish, which was good because I was a bit surprised by the higher prices for the nigiri. Very fresh and flavorful. It was pretty crowded and a bit on the cozy and noisy side, but we were ok with the atmosphere. The servers all seemed to be enjoying their jobs, which is always a bonus! Overall - I give it a very solid 4+ and I'll be back next time I'm in town.

Run down inside and out, way too small (how could someone find a cozy or even open spot?), we tried a few times and the last was the last, we were actually pursued by the waiter to the sidewalk shouting after us as we fled, "Hey! where are you guys going?...you GUYS..." Non merci. We felt uncomfortable by the empty vibe and even one time when it WASN'T full capacity that waiter would NOT compromise temporarily and clear a table so we could sit and BREATHE. The name sounds like it belongs next to the ER; "syring-a"? Oi vey, my appetite's already been extracted and put to silt like sleep!

Three of us stopped in here for lunch and the quality and freshness of the sushi was fantastic. This is a very small place so be prepared to wait. However we got lucky and sat right down. Rolls run from $7 - $19 and sushi is around $5 for 2 pieces. A very good place to stop if you want great quality food. You will not be disappointed.

Have heard what a great place this is...finally I make it to this little gem in North Idaho. Hands down best Sushi this side of Spokane... atmosphere is small but warm and comfy, menu is fantastic, owners are personable and take pride in their creations.....And if you are lucky enough to sit up to the Sushi Bar, Sir Basso will spoil you with his fantastic palate for good sushi. Packed on Tuesday night.....DELISH! A must when you are in Coeur d'Alene

Well, others must definitely have a different palate than moi! The seafood tempura was tasteless; except for later when bile was added to it. Alad, it must be me!

I have to say that this is the best Sushi in town! It appears a bit "divy" but it is spectacular! Only "real" sushi in North Idaho. They have Saki but I don't drink it but I usually have so many beers to choose from that I pick a few. Good problems to have!

MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO best as it gets almost anywhere restaurant! Our friend from Spokane made a reservation for us to eat here while we were visiting. OMG it was totally off the charts amazing. The entire menu was creative as well as the sake and drink menu. I am super picky, have done a lot of traveling and I do not give 5 stars that often for sushi. The owners care about this place and have put a lot of thought into it. The staff is incredible. They have the coolest art on the walls by a local artist. The whole experience was very memorable and I want to go back. Hey, I would get a ticket to fly there and eat, even for one day. It was that good!

This is hands-down the only sushi place to go to in CDA!!! The food is always out of this world, and the service is second to none. If you are in town looking to get some sushi there is only one place the locals go and that is Syringa! Get a reservation if you can, or try your luck on a first come first serve basis. If you're alone, find a spot at the bar, you might just get a special treat.

Syringa deserves the four star rating that it currently has. The food is among the top tier for the price offered in the Coeur d'Alene area. I was happy with my bento box that I ordered. It came with teriyaki beef, tonkatsu, rice, tempura vegetables and shrimp, salad and two small pot stickers. The beef was cooked perfectly to ordered and good quality. The pork seemed a little over done, but was breaded nicely. The salad had a restaurant made miso cream dressing that added quality uniqueness. I've had good tempura before, but was very pleasantly surprised with Syringa's version; crisp on the outside, but the shrimp and vegetables were excellently preserved. I tried my wife's sushi and thoroughly enjoyed it (and I'm not the biggest sushi fan). It was the Las Vegas roll and seemed to be a good sushi for beginners as cream cheese is never bad! Our server was friendly and helpful. The food did take a long time to come out. The restaurant is quite small so I wondered what was taking so long because even at full capacity it is much smaller than most restaurants. They were also totally out of several sodas which surprised me. They only sell sodas in bottles and not fountain and I was pretty disappointed in that.

Wonderful place--great menu, classy decor, terrific service, cool dinnerware. I loved it that they had small portions of items like udon, so my eight-year-old wasn't stuck sharing a plate with me or ordering an entree that was so huge we'd have to carry most of it home with us. I thought the portions were generous and the sushi variety was just right. My older daughter has worked at a Japanese restaurant, so has high standards, and she was very impressed (adds that the artwork was cool--loved the dragon).

I guess there is a first time for everything. I am writing my first bad review. We attempted to ask our waiter a couple of questions and he was no help. My soup tasted like hot water with green onion in it. My Las Vegas roll was mushy and bland. When I tasted my husband's fried rice, it had zero flavor. I don't understand how this place has a better rating than The Ugly Fish, which was pretty good. What a waste of our time and money. Very disappointing.

I've only been here a few times. Both experiences yielded almost exactly the same results. Ordered Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box. Friend ordered Syringa Bento Box. We got one of each soup (miso and Smoked Tomato Bisque). Tomato Bisque soup - best part of the meal. Very tasty Miso soup - bland, very little flavor Teriyaki chicken - flavor OK, dry/tough meat. A couple pieces of broccoli and zucchini, what I *think* was eggplant (chewy & weird), and about 90% onion. Pork tonkatsu - OK flavor. VERY dry and COLD. Salad - decent. Tempura - On a grease scale it was about an 8 or 9 out of 10. VERY heavy on the batter and slimy. Flavor was OK if you got a bite that was lighter on the batter. Sushi - Had a bite of friends - tasted fine. Big portion. Maybe I'm ordering the wrong thing, but the cold tonkatsu, tough chicken, and bland miso soup were pretty much the same as my last visit. It was also very chilly with the AC going and the music was too loud :).

I loved this place. It was busy and we had to wait 10 minutes for a table so one of the servers let us order a beer at the waiting chairs. The food was great and our waiter was awesome.

Kampai!

  • Rachelle C.

Make a reservation to ensure you're seated when you want to be.

we are from the San Francisco area and have been to some AMAZING sushi places.

The only place I'll go for my sushi fix! Food is always good, there have been occasions when service could be friendlier.

Well, others must definitely have a different palate than moi! The seafood tempura was tasteless; except for later when bile was added to it. Smallest sushi roll I've ever seen...unless quarter size is normal to you ? Let us not forget it is the first bar I've experienced where the customer is charged for extra wasabi and/or ginger.

Sushi rolls are way to small and over priced. Rolls were very dry and didn't taste "fresh". Our Framily said the bento box and tempura they ordered was delicious and very affordable. The atmosphere is nice but our waiter was very snobby.

In my opinion the best sushi joint you'll find in CDA.

  • Arleen F.

O my word. If I lived in Coeur d' Alene, this would be the only Japanese restaurant I would ever go to. Hell, I'm just going to move here, the food was that good! The rolls were fantastic, the sayuri sake will always be a favorite of mine so we absolutely had a few bottles of that. The salmon sashimi was simply the best salmon sashimi I've ever had, nice thick slices that melt in the mouth like buttery goodness. The poke was incredible! Overall presentation was spot on, and our waitress was great too! I will be dreaming of this place for a long time...and I'm from Oregon, we have amazing sushi and this place still had the best salmon sashimi I've ever had. Oh yea, the yellowtail hamachi...amazing!!!

This place is the BEST! It has a fun vibe, the food is always spot on and even when it is packed (and it's never not packed), the service is perfection. The braised green beans, are a favorite!

The sushi here is the best you will find in Couer d'Alene. The fish was fresh and the rolls were delicious. The Seattle roll and dragon roll were prepared with great portions. The customer service was A+. Try Hakkasan sake paired with a couple of sushi rolls and you will leave satisfied! Best sushi in CDA hands down!

I love this place. It's not the fanciest place but is comfortable with enough character to give it its own dimension. It's also nice to know you can get go sushi without having to go to Seattle. Although we had to drive up from Moscow it's worth the trip. The food was delicious and with good presentation. It's a small place so make a reservation.

I loved this place. It was busy and we had to wait 10 minutes for a table so one of the servers let us order a beer at the waiting chairs. The food was great and our waiter was awesome.

Great sushi, really good specials. Those are the pros, the cons are very small seating area and not a real personable staff. Making reservations are pretty much a must if you want a chance to get in, outside seating available in the summer.

Excellent sushi for an amazing price. Really unique and interesting rolls, with a good assortment of crowd favorites too. Excited to try it again!

Best bet in town for sushi/sashimi, I don't get to eat it often; my wife doesn't like the stuff. Get a reservation! Get a bigger place with a separate bar so we don't have to listen to the loud folks would be nice.

Although I love the sushi, the service wasn't very good. Recently, I called to get an order to pick up and was told they were too busy. I was shocked. Maybe I'll go back, maybe not. There is other good sushi in the area.

Never thought 'inland' sushi would compare with the best out there. Thrilled to be wrong. Try the hamachi and the oyster shooter.

Great place to hang out, and the sushi isn't half bad, but it gets crowded sometimes and have to secure a seat! But it's been a frequent hang out of mine... For great sushi and conversation.

we are from the San Francisco area and have been to some AMAZING sushi places.
